DescriptionPurchased from Heritage Auction. Twice up art (love the big size).I don't usually discuss my purchases but this page presents a potential discussion. This page (and the page before it) were sold at the same time. The other page is also great, sold for significantly less but this is the stronger "battle page". In my opinion, the conversation/debate part is: 1) Gene Colan is very underrated as a Silver-Age artist. His flow of motion and perspectives are excellent, and you can spot his style easily. 2) From what I can tell, this was one of the highest prices paid for a Gene Colan panel page. Many other Spider-Man panel pages from this time period have sold for significantly more, and some are not even fight scenes. 3) Which leads to the question, would this have sold for significantly more if Gene Colan had done this exact page, but it was published in "Amazing Spider-Man". Or what if John Romita had done this page in Daredevil (yes, it would look different). 4) Which leads to another question. Is John Romita's work so in demand because he is such a great artist, or because he took over Amazing Spider-Man (the most popular super-hero). I personally like Colan's work a lot better, but other than Iron-Man (TOS), he also had to draw Daredevil (good character but not one of the top five) and Sub-Mariner (TTA), yuck. I feel this is an excellent battle page, and while Stilt-Man isn't one of the greatest villains, he is artistically interesting. Also, at least its not a battle page fighting a bunch of thugs (which is in a lot of comic books). Love to hear thoughts on this. Social/Sharing |

If the quality of the piece doesn't matter in this hobby, then what does? The other page is all about the bottom right panel. Yours is an entire Twice-up battle page.

It's a great page regardless of where it saw print. I have a great Romita Spider-Man cover... printed as Sub-Mariner #69. It's worth way less as a Sub-Mariner issue vs an Amazing Spider-Man issue but the art itself couldn't be any better!

Great, dynamic page! and interesting questions - you could post on CGC boards and get a thread going? On Q#3, pages in ASM do command a premium but not sure it would be substantial here. If Romita art then there would be at least one more serious buyer so price would be higher. I agree that Colan is a bit underappreciated but feels like that is changing.

This is a page from the first DD issue i've read...Still in love with Stilt Man...and Spidey ! I've bought a Romita Sr page for a lot of money...but this page with the vertical panel and the perspective is a gem...was following it but my budget wasn't enough 😂....You're a lucky guy ! This page is breathtaking

With a villain called Stiltman, why not vertical panels? That said, in my opinion, Gene the Dean was a master at page layout and storytelling - very fluid, very cinematographic; he belongs among the Marvel Pantheon of artists. Regardless of title or character, you have yourself a great page. Congratulations!

Amazing page (pun intended...), must be impressive in person. As to pricing, one consideration is that Colan had such a long stint on DD that you are bound to have big variance in prices, depending on quality and vintage. I have not seen that many high quality twice up pages with DD either. As to why Romita prices are so high, a lot has to do with the success of the comic book itself, not only the character. Many people have Romita's run on it, with all the soap etc, as their emotional sweetspot. I don't think prices of Romita DD are even close.

There's no doubt that a particular title and artist makes a big difference in value, regardless of quality. You're right that Spidey's title is the most popular, thus commands the highest prices. Also agree that Colan is slightly underrated. Consistently excellent, but kind of offbeat. Doesn't strike me that he was born to do comics, like Kirby. Ironically, while I like Romita's art, I think he's slightly overrated. But, associated with Spidey, so zooms to the top echelon.

Really awesome! Great action from different perspectives in every panel, and you can tell that the Ditko Spidey is still THE Spidey at the time :) Sweet example all around. Sincere congrats!

Gorgeous page. Colan is the best. Prices in comic art (like all art) are arbitrary, and often reflect whatever artist the masses believe is collectible and worthy. Sometimes the masses are right and pick the best artists, and sometimes they are wrong and pick crap. That's why you have to collect what you love. How can you not love this page? It's steller!!

Stiltman not a very long lived character, maybe a bit too stilted ;-) Spectacular page!

A stellar addition! I love how Colan draws motion and action; It explodes off the page. I totally slept on Colan, much to my collection's detriment, and my recent chagrin. You have something special here. Congrats!

What an amazing page! There's no gristle on this steak! If Colan is underrated, I hope he stays that way until I'm done collecting. I'd really like a solid Colan Daredevil page for my collection, but this would be amazing.

This is a superb page by one of the best artists on Dd. He drew a great spiderman! Not sure why knocking the other pages makes this better. They are all pretty good. The price you paid was a very very good deal. Congrats!

Stunning Spider-Man battle page by Colan and Giacoia! Hard to beat a page with Spidey fighting a major Marvel villain like Stilt Man for sheer explosive power! So what if it's in Daredevil, it's still Spider-Man!
