DescriptionThe moody blues! Gabriele Dell’Otto struts onto the Marvel scene with an inspired and incredible blast of visual wizardry that leans heavily into the spectral range of 600 to 670 terahertz, as Nick Fury sits atop his throne in the war room of a S.H.I.E.L.D helicarrier, lost in reverie. If I had to guess, I’d say he’s feeling… blue?Right out of the gate, here on page 5 of his first assignment at Marvel Comics, Dell’Otto displays his incredible mastery of lighting and moody atmosphere. The eerie green glow from the Mission Control monitors in the second-to-last panel is fantastic… but it barely penetrates the overwhelming sea of blue that floods the room thanks to the huge viewscreen behind Fury. Powerless to resist the siren’s call of the page, the viewer is pulled into its depths… (The killer first panel image of Fury was also used on the cover of the OHOTMU-reminiscent tie-in: “Secret War: From the Files of Nick Fury”.) It's probably more lucrative for Dell'Otto to be a cover artist at this point in his career but this series made me want to see more sequential work from him.

I know Bendis is well known for his decompressed storytelling approach but he is also greatly helped by Dell'Otto here, as it takes one full page and 5 panels for Fury to turn his head from (his) right to (his) left !
! GASP ! (thinks the reader ! WHY did he turn his head ?!!!? WHAT is he going to say !?!?)
What unbearable tension ! ;p
Joking aside, that's a very lovely page and Dell'Otto can certainly paint :)

If I could save time in Dell’Otto
The first thing that I'd like in blue
Is to paint Fury page
'Til eternity washes away
Just to spend them in room
If I could make page has monitors
Artworks could make Bendis come true
I'd save Fury page like a pleasure and then
Again, it's a Secret with you
But there never seems to be enough crime
Control the things you want to do
Once you buy them
I've looked around enough to know
That you're the throne of Dell’Otto
Through time with

The level of finish here is almost surreal. Fury may be feeling blue, but you must be tickled pink to land this beauty. Congrats!

Love the cool blues. Just came in from mowing my lawn in 102 degree weather (with an old school non-power mower no less) and seeing this page just brought my body temp down several degrees. The colors set the tone and mood of the page perfectly.

Oh, Moody blue,
Tell me what I'm listen’' to
I’m worrying night and day
And I cannot say
Why I am this blue.

Very nice, Jason! The page has great atmosphere and tone. The deep blues, greys, and stark shadows were the perfect choices to sell the mood of secrecy and strategy that permeates Nick Fury's world. It has a very strong cinematic quality, almost like we're looking at stills from a spy thriller. The composition and story flow is really nice, too. I love the great view of the "command center" behind Fury as he sits, brooding in his chair, while the camera continues slowly closing in on him, almost as if we may be privy to his thoughts. The sudden pull away of the camera in the last panel to show the boardroom scene is also a nice technique to pull us away from Fury’s solitude into his world of command.
I think one thing that really deserves mention is the quality of the craftsmanship. Rarely do we look back at a comic book artist's earliest work and feel blown away by how good it looks, but this is one of those exceptions. Congratulations on a spectacular addition!
