Description

Any day I can add a wonderful For Better or For Worse daily strip to the collection is a good day. This particular daily is from October 11, 1991, and features Elly talking with Michael about his homework, only to discover that he can totally ignore stuff he doesn't want to hear. Lynn Johnston is a master storyteller, both in drawing and writing, and that storytelling ability is clear in this daily. For one thing, the drawing is just beautiful. She manages a wonderful variation in line weight throughout, allowing those thick-and-thin contour lines to play with the shading tape textures. And then the writing. Just check out Elly's expression in the third panel as Michael's logic sinks in. She leans against the panel border with such a sense of figural resignation. Finally, I love the way that Johnston plays with her text and word balloons. Sometimes the text is contained; sometimes it's not. She uses the space of the text beautifully.

This piece came from the collection of the cartoonist Jack Ziegler.

The teenager's natural filter is a defense mechanism to which there is no to logical way penetrate.

Seems logical to me. Back in my college days, I always studied with the radio on.

Great example of a great strip - I used to do homework in front of the TV in high school but I don't think I could do that these days!
