DescriptionSHE LIES WITH ANGELS - ANGEL & HUSKFrom the pages of Uncanny X-Men #441 comes this page from the concluding chapter of SHE LIES WITH ANGELS storyline by Chuck Austen. It’s a modern day Romeo and Juliette with the Kentucky warring families of the Guthries vs the Cabots. Two star crossed lovers have tragic endings; Josh Guthrie, aka Icarus and Julia Cabot; he appears to be a casualty from the warring families, she mourns his death and takes her life drowning in a lake, while holding his lifeless body. Josh’s mutant power heals him, bringing him back from death, but it’s too late for Julia to be saved. This page features a somewhat controversial subject matter of young Paige Guthrie (Husk) in a passionate embrace with a much older Warren Worthington III (Angel). Paige Guthrie first appeared in 1984’s ROM ANNUAL #3 as a younger sister to Sam Guthrie (Cannonball), more fleshed out in New Mutants #42 (1986j. She later came out as mutant Husk in X-Force #32 (1994), with the horrific ability of changing her form in density, appearance and substance by ripping off her outer skin. Pairing these two body dysmorphic characters together was bound for disaster. They are both traditionally beautiful people, but each hates themselves for what they are and how they look. Angel went through many a process to try and remove his wings and take away his mutant genes. While Husk has generally always hated her appearance and even got addicted to the horrific act changing what she looked like, by literally tearing her skin off in what always appears as a painful act. She, in her self loathing spirit, has gone through a few toads for the relationships she’s had, even at one point actually dating Mortimer Toynbee (aka Toad), but I have to say I really enjoyed that relationship when he was the janitor of the Xavier/Jean Grey School for mutants. It was a really great beauty and the beast. This page features Angel and Husk being lusty in air, as Julia Cabot screams out loudly for the loss of Joshua Guthrie (Paige’s younger brother). Angel and Husk her this cry, and decide to stop their lusty engagements to investigate. She tears off her skin to reveal a metal skin underneath. I have always enjoyed the brutal tearing off of her skin to reveal something fun and new underneath, like unwrapping a Christmas gift to see what cool things are underneath, ok that sounds psychotic, but in Husk’s case it’s kind of cool. I really enjoy Larroca’s layout and environment horizon at this high angle (in panel two) and love his reveal of Husk’s metal skin in the 4th panel. As a stand-alone panel page it feels very passionate as these two innocents embrace then turning to something much more primal by the end. But story wise she is preparing for battle and needs to go take out some battle bots. A short lived controversial romance that I am happy to have in my collection to represent this odd pairing of troubled X-characters, from an amazing overall storyline of the Guthrie family. This, to me, was one of those odd pairings because of the age gap. However it was equally weird between Kitty and Peter. The only difference is they didnt do the nasty for alll the world to see. Congrats on the pick up

When Chuck Austen is involved, you can be sure some edgy controversy comes with it. After all, he did the much ballyhooed mini series Strips that got the mods of CAF all in a tussle when a piece was posted from it. Larroca and Miki make this feel so light and lyrical with thin fragile lines to reflect the nature of this relationship.

I really like Larrocca's soft lighter lines, nice pickup!

Sometimes it seems like so much attention was paid to the weirdness of Austen's stories that it overshadowed how strong Larroca's artwork was during this run. Larroca could always be counted on to produce great pencils on the X-books.
