Description

Ah, my main pre-con commission for this Spring's FACTS in 2022: a good ol' beaten up Man Without Fear. Done by "The Nice House on the Lake" and "Detective Comics" superstar Álvaro Martínez Bueno.

Apparently, he had worked on this the night before the convention until 3 am & then did some finishes at the show. He admitted he got carried away, as this was supposed to be a head sketch only (the only commission level he currently takes).

But what a piece! I love the rendering of the mask; the clearly bruised face; the ink wash to add some shadows, the feeble hand position. I'm absolutely in love with this one.

We talked for... too long, most likely, but I was the only one at his table at the time, so that was all okay. About "The Nice House on the Lake" in many different ways, work-life balance, his plans for the future.

I have to say I was surprised his wife wasn't there (but she was ill), as I wanted to thank her for the lovely and great communication of the last six months. In regards to questions, purchases, my commission. Amazing customer service! Álvaro promised he would relay the info.

Funny anecdote, but I was almost out of the Artist Alley before I noticed I hadn't paid! I ran back and got that sorted out, and Álvaro apologized to me even. I wanted to give a bit extra for his effort, but he refused heavily.

He really does - seeing him on that title would be amazing. I'm sure he's locked down for a couple of years over at DC Comics, though.

Ha! And yes, he almost painfully mentioned the time he put into this one. He loved the outcome, but Alvaro also seems very aware of his value and time/effort spent per piece. I mean, considering his busy agenda, it only makes sense.
