DescriptionA couple of weeks ago, Federico Mele and I bonded over our shared love over Ben Reilly's stint as the Amazing Spider-Man and especially that revamped costume. We both read Sensational Spider-Man #0 in our own native languages and found it to be meaningful for our love for the hobby. The logical conclusion was to let Federico do his take, an homage or re-interpretation, of that cover (originally by Dan Jurgens & Klaus Janson). The result speaks for itself. Big fan of the dynamic, yet recognizable pose (which fits within the theme of all the #0 poses on the lenticular cover). The figure & colour work is what steals the show, letting Ben/Spidey soak up all the attention. Still, the piece has some nuanced background elements around the hero, like the webbing, as well as the skyscrapers. All in that subtle lighter-blue, so it wouldn't take away from the main attraction. This commission is 11x17 & was done in watercolours. Social/Sharing |

Ben Reilly is great in this piece like a spider that found a corner to spin his web and is just hanging out. Mele's figure puts just the right amount of weight hanging to let it look natural like a rock climber.

Definitely - it's only a matter of time before we see Federico pop up on something published involving Spider-Man. He gets how the character should look and feel in these pin-ups.

Wow! Loving that use of watercolor throughout. Somehow exact and loose/organic at the same time. Congrats!

Absolutely - the overall composition is of course quite deliberate and focused, but the figure somehow feels very organic and lifelike. I could stare at the lines going from one hand to the other for a while. The webs above, as an homage to the cover of Sensational #0, are also such a nice touch.
