Description"His name was Ben... He was my brother..."It's no secret that my favorite character in comics in Ben Reilly. Every time I see something nice and shiny with him on it, I'll probably want to look into snagging it. This time, I found this emotional page from the "Sensational Spider-Man" title, part of a back-up story in issue 17, by Todd Dezago & Richard Case. Case, known for his pencil and mainly inking work on Vertigo titles, also did regular inks for Mike Wieringo on "Sensational". Here, he did the short story on his own. The story has Spidey at the Ravencroft Institute, trying to stop an enraged DK/David Kalen. David keeps flailing around, apparently having "decomposted" & murdered three guards. Yes, he has decay and decomposting powers. DK's act of doing so jogs Peter's memory of Ben Reilly passing away. It seems that David is running amok as he is feeling alone. Apparently, he lost his brother (in the freak accident that gave him his powers). You see where Todd was going with this. "Do you have any idea what it's like to lose a brother?!" Peter hesitates for a moment and then admits: "Yeah... Yes, I do.". He starts talking about Ben and how much he misses *his* brother. But we have to move on and we have to let go. The fight comes to a halt and DK gives himself up. This page 21 specifically is the emotional hook of the story. On one side, it's where Spidey stops the villain in this story. On the other side, it's where the lasting effects of the Clone Saga show up. Peter's family (in more ways than one) grew throughout the Saga - and it all got taken away from him. It hurt him. Yet he's trying to move on and give it its own place. As we all need to do sometimes. The half-splash with Ben Reilly both in and out of his Sensational costume is what drew me in. Then I re-read the story and I knew this was right up my alley. Love the storytelling choice of the last panel of having the hulking monster be shown smaller, to show how it's agreed to give up. It's got the flash and the emotional weight that Peter carries with him! Very nice that it ends up where both are shown together, still shining in a tunnel of darkness.
