Description

Paris Fan Festival 2023 gave me the opportunity to catch up with one of my favorite people in the comic book business: Javi Fernandez. I met him back in 2016 at FACTS, when rolling into this hobby & I've never left since - probably partially thanks to his kindness when meeting one of my idols. It also give me the chance to pick up this commission I ordered early last year.

In January 2022, Black Diamond Comic Art opened up a small mail-away commission list for 9x12 busts by Javi Fernandez. It was communicated upfront that it could take up to twelve months - and in the end, it was a bit longer than that. All good, though, considering the piece.

Funnily enough, inflation snuck up on me with this one. I paid less for this bust commission a year ago, than his head pieces go (and sell out) now.

Javi followed his process for his published art: pencils, inks & screentone. I specifically requested a Nightwing in the rain, homaging his very first Rebirth cover for "Nightwing".

Very "Javi", detailed, lean & "ready to go" Dick Grayson here. And that's exactly what I wanted.

Great defiant battling pose! You can mistake the rain for blood on his face.

So rad! Love the expression, rain effect, and the zipatone accents really take it over the top! Congrats!
