DescriptionLast weekend meant a magical event that I had waited for since I saw my first Star Wars movie as a kid, "Return of the Jedi": I got to meet Mark Hamill. For the rest of Fan Expo San Francisco during the end of November 2023, I managed to spend some time in the star-filled Artist Alley. And it was an impressive one for my first US show. Quite late into the show on Saturday afternoon, I visited Tom Grummett's table. He was so incredibly kind, as was his lovely wife. Very talkative & nice for this Belgian tourist. Commission-wise, I was going back & forth, as I had overspent already. Tom's pages were magnificent, but were more expensive than his commissions. They did inspire & push me to ask this Spidey-Sense Peter Parker - which I thought was a nice idea for such a classic artist. Tom loved the idea, he said, and let himself be carried away. Originally, only the face would be "Spidey". Interestingly, size didn't matter (ha.). I saw a Superman sketch cover on his table and asked if a smaller size would impact the price. He said that I'd get "bang for my buck", and something bigger. I expected 11x17. But it's not 11x17. This is HUGE. I wasn't planning on anything over 9x12 for my luggage, but had bought an 11x17 toploader for my Erik Larsen. Even then this wouldn't fit. To my best estimations, it's 12x18 - almost 13x19. All in all, an A+ experience! Social/Sharing |

One can examine Grummett's version of Spidey and see a lot of the fresh energy of his Superboy. This looks like he took inspiration from 80's Peter Parker/Spider-Man from the Marvel house style.

Actually, to picture that: Grummett did a couple of Spider-Verse pages with Dan Slott ten years ago that absolutely match that tone & style. Worth checking out!

I love the half Pete half Spidey pieces! I actually got a lot of head sketches over the years, but this is a rad full figure! Like the textures you can see in the pencils. Congrats!

Kahlil, I've been adoring those for years! Such a fun idea & I'm quite sure those inspired me all those years ago when I started on this website!

Man, this is a perfect commission! An excellent take on the classic "half and half" face, withthe usually perfect anatomical proportions for the character and in classic Romita model style rather than the updated McFarlane take. Splendid!

Definitely! Tom manifested his inner Romita Sr. and it shows! Big fan of this idea, too, as it gives you "two for the price of one". Both Peter & Spidey. Thanks for the insightful comment, Ruben!
