DescriptionDetective Comics (Vol. 1) #604 Original Cover Art (September 1989). This is the first issue in the Mud Pack arc entitled "The Mud Pack, Part One: Men of Clay". This arc ran from issues 604 - 607, with a prelude in Secret Origins (Vol. 2) #44. It focused on the various members of Bats' rouge gallery who adopted the Clayface identity over the years. The cover to this first issue features Clayface (Basil Karlo) and a mud-covered Dark Knight. The glinting dagger along with the grotesque mess that Bats finds himself in builds up the suspense and sets a foreboding tone. These are trademarks of the amazing Norm Breyfogle who penciled and inked this cover as well as all the interior art for this issue (and for that matter, the entire arc). Breyfogle is well known for his long successful run on both Batman and Detective Comics and is considered one of the best Bat artists of all time. This cover is a great example of his work.Accomplished in ink over graphite on 11" X 17" art board. All text are stat paste-ups, and there is a stat paste-up right above the hand holding the knife. Light toning, marginal pinholes, tape along the left margin, and small spots of soiling in lower left area in Batman's chest. Signed to the right of the Bat emblem in the lower area by Norm. O still own this comic and read the 'Mud Pack' series recently. Great cover, congratulations.

A Batman cover from 1989 at the height of Batmania! Breyfogle's work at this time period will always be a pure shot of nostalgia when the entry point for comics was the Batman movie.

I remember picking this up on the newstand when it came out. This cover is so great and memorable. This whole series was great. Congratulations!

Fantastic cover by one of the all-time greatest Bat-artists ! Breyfogle certainly knew how to create eye catching images !

A great cover from the peak of the Tim Burton-era Batman popularity. People who didn't live through the bat-craze of 1989 will never be able to appreciate how wonderfully massive it was.

Striking Detective Comics cover by the great Norm Breyfogle! Love this image of a mud-covered Dark Knight threatened by a knife! Genuinely chilling cover!

Great pure illustration but the sense of atmosphere and dread...super effective image. Makes you want to do what a cover should - open up the book and see what's up on the inside! Congrats!
