DescriptionDetective Comics (Vol. 2) #19 (June 2013) original gatefold cover art for "The 900". Had the renumbering in the New 52 era not been done, this would have been issue #900, hence the name of the first story in this 80-page oversized issue. The other stories include "Birth of a Family", "War Council", "Birdwatching", and "Through a Blue Lens".The cover takes inspiration from the first story where hundreds of Gotham citizens have been infected with a "Man Bat" serum, resulting in the night sky swarming with them. Bats is tattered and bruised, as a demon-inspired Man Bat descends on him, his legions not far behind. It is no wonder this one needed to be a gatefold cover (essentially a DPS) given the depth and scale of the scene. Batman is large and pissed in the foreground, fists clenched, ready to deliver the vengeance that only he can serve up. The infected Man Bats are terrifying, truly looking like they flew out of the depths of Hell. You can almost feel the terror as you realize just how large the swarm is in the image. I love the perspective looking up into the sky. The scale and depth is really well done, and the damage throughout the city is evident. This incredible piece was hand penciled by Jason Fabok and is part of an impressive cover run he had on the New 52 iteration of Detective Comics. Like his other covers from the time, it is entirely graphite, but with the effect of inking (the actual inking was done digitally). Jay's attention to detail has always been amazing to me, and this one is a shining example due to the size and scale. The art was hand drawn in graphite on 2 11"X17" art boards (so total size of 22" X 17"). Signed below Batman's left knee by Jason. Social/Sharing |

Really exciting wrap-around cover, David! Was this published directly from the pencils? Because damn, pencils don't get much more tight and finished than this! I love that he incorporated the 900 into the image as well!

Ah, it's a gatefold cover. The Batman on the left side threw me off as he wouldn't appear just on the back cover. The Batman side was also used by itself for 3 more covers giving this a rare distinction. Very strong work by Fabok. All the fantastical elements of this dominate both sides as it pushes the grounded elements to the side and back.
