Description

Well, it was high time I found a page from Swamp Thing #4 and it proved to be one that, I had been trying to get for over a decade ! I remember trying to get this from the long time owner who never wanted to part with it.I guess time marches on and it finally became available at auction, but I wasn't in a financial position to buy it so, "Poof" it was gone again,Dag nab it!
So, time marches on once again and all of a sudden at OAX 2025 it appears again...I thought to myself, now's my time... After a few on-lookers passed on the page,I finally got my chance and worked out a trade deal with Mike Burkey and now, I couldn't be more happy! I guess sometimes you just have to wait for the right piece at the right time, but I'm running out of years though and this can't keep happening can it,lol !
With regards to this page, it shows us just what a genius Bernie was on this series in bringing the "Monster on the Moors" to life, especially to a 16 year old kid at the time !

So easy to tell who's evil in this page and it's not Swamp Thing.  Masterful handling of inks as this period of Wrightson was peak 70's DC horror.  Storytelling staged like old Universal Monster movies as there is a sense of dread in the atmosphere.

Isn't that something it seems to just pop out right at you, with all the dark, lights and grey tone effects,I totally agree as it tends to focus the viewer on the whole page ! Hey, nice to meet up with you at OAX by the way, hope to see you next year again ! Thanks for the nice comment !

Now THAT'S dedication paying off! Some pages are just meant to find their way home, and it sounds like this Swamp Thing gem was destined for your collection, Michael. The wait makes the victory even sweeter! And you’re right, Bernie’s work on this series was pure genius, bringing that eerie, atmospheric magic to life in a way that stuck with so many fans. Huge congrats on finally landing this one!

Wrightson creates an atmosphere akin to a Universal monster movie. Cheers on finally getting your page.

Hi Scott, long time no talk too at SDCC ! Don't think for a second I haven't looked at your splash at least a hundred times or so,lol ! Our discussion even included the Werewolf splash you used to own,Yowza, but that opening "Monster on the Moors"splash is Amazing, congrats !

Wow! Magnificent addition to your peak obsession. Top right portrait is classic Swampy - you need to make that your CAF avatar! :)

Sweet Wrightson ST page - neat contrast of the failed modern technology versus the functional wagon.

A classic Swamp Thing page! Love this scene of Swamp Thing, having survived a plane crash, being surprised by the arrival of two strangers who have come to load up the other survivors in a wagon. Who knows what they may be planning to do with the body? BWAH HAH HAH HAH! What a classic monster-on-the-moors kind of story! Stunning layout by Bernie Wrightson. Love those two top panels with great images of Swamp Thing. But the real killer panel is that wide middle scene of the horse-drawn wagon. The rendering of this scene is astonishing! Love the shadows and the exquisite crosshatching! This is Bernie Wrightson at his best! Fabulous pick-up, congrats!

Truly a special page. I remember getting this comic from my mom from the local drug store, on a day that I was home from school with the flu. I'll never forget the feeling of reading this for the first time. To this day, I think ST issue 4 was one of Bernie's crowning achievements in the medium. Congratulations on this very memorable page, and maybe (save the werewolf splash), the most memorable of the book.
