Description

Beautiful piece by this Italian master (b. Genova, 1927) whose style is at first sight quite similar to Toppi's (especially the intricated inking technique), but usually more traditional regarding the composition of the page. Of course not in this case!
Gattia is mostly appreciated for his great accuracy at drawing historical themed comics, so I'd say this is a perfect example of his art.
This page is from the story "Pedro de Valdivia" (Spanish conquistador, first governor of Chile and founder of Santiago) first published by Larousse, France, in 1979 (then in Italy, in 1981) and part of a very interesting series titled "The Discovery of the World".
