Description

I own an original pen and ink Sgt. Rock by Joe Kubert that I greatly enjoy. However, Rock has always looked lonely to me. See ...

So, I commissioned Matthew Clark to create a pencil layout of the major Easy Company members that I will build into a jam by having other artists do the finishes. The Sgt. Rock in the center is a print of a high resolution scan of my original. Matthew picked the team based on reference that I provided (see Additional Images).

I decided to use finishers that met either one of two criteria:
  • I know the artist well enough that they'd recognize me on the street or
  • The artist has a background with Sgt. Rock or war comics generally

I've been turned down by Larry Hama (G.I.Joe) and Tom Scioli, (Transformers vs. G.I. Joe). In both cases, they cited the fact that they hadn't inked anything in years. I can accept that.

Here's the progress to date (L to R):

  1. Bulldozer - Joe Rubinstein
  2. Little Sure Shot - Thom Zahler
  3. Four Eyes - Joe Eisma
  4. Sgt. Frank Rock - Joe Kubert (printed from scan of original); colors by Rubinstein
  5. Jackie Johnson - Billy Tucci
  6. Zack - Bob McLeod
  7. Ice Cream Soldier - David Marquez
  8. Wildman - Aaron Lopresti

Both David and Aaron praised Matt's work. They said it made their job really easy.

Thom and Joe Eisma worked on it at Comicpalooza 2015 and I think that they both did excellent work.

Joe Rubinstein started Bulldozer at the same show, but discovered right after he started that his plane was 3 hours earlier than he thought and had to stop. One reason that he wasn't done was that he colored Sgt. Rock as well. I got Bulldozer completed at Space City Comic Con 2016.

I approached Billy Tucci as soon as I entered Alamo City Comic Con 2015 and asked if he'd be interested in inking and coloring one of the two remaining characters. He was really excited to contribute and I was and remain thrilled to get him to participate since I've really enjoyed his Sgt. Rock work.

I wasn't sure who to get to get for the last figure. I knew I wanted to get it done at Heroescon 2018 and there were a slew of inkers available. I finally decided on Bob McLeod. I know him well and he was just entered into the Inkwell Hall of Fame. He did an excellent job.

So, it's finished. I'm trying to decide what to do next.

Looks fantastic, Alex. The colors are nice and subtle, I think they'll add a whole new dimension to the piece.
