DescriptionOkay, I'll admit that coloring book comic art isn't a major category for me. I'll also admit that Superman art by Alex and Frank does not match my theme. (Now Frank on JLA or Alex on Air Wave would). So, why do I have it? Well, it's kind of a sad story, but i'll share it anyway.I met my friend David when our daughters went to Kindergarten. He was a trial lawyer and married the woman he fell in love with when they were in the fifth grade. They had two daughters; the second also the same age as one of mine. Good guy; great dad. He got cancer. Not just cancer, esophageal cancer that made it hard for him to talk and forced him on to SS disability pretty quickly; money was tight. The prognosis was never good and eventually it was obvious that the cancer was going to win. Along the way, he had mentioned that he had a favorite comic - Superboy 89, the first appearance of Mon-El. Of course, his mom (the evil villain in so many comic book related stories) had thrown them away when he went to college. Off to eBay, where I found that issue as a gift. No big deal, it was a nice copy, but something he could read. It made him smile. A little bit later, he brought me a present - Superman's Supermobile which appeared in Action Comics 481 and in obviously in this coloring book. One day, after David had passed, I found this art on eBay. I had to buy it. I wrote to Frank about it, but his memory doesn't match what I have. I don't care; it reminds me of my friend. Frank wrote to me on his FB page as follows: hi, alex...i did a few supe color books. i believe alex saviuk pencilled most of them but not sure about this one. i remember i had to ink on mylar overlays so i think the pencils remained intact. don't know why a supercar was used. first time i think it was used. I wrote to Alex and he said: Hi Alex! This doesn’t ring a bell with me but that’s not saying I didn’t pencil it. Like I said, I remember a Lex Luther coloring book but that was around 35 years ago. I haven’t seen it probably since then P.S., Sometime after his passing Beth brought the Superboy comic back to me. She said it made David really happy; I'm glad for that even if it was just 15 minutes. Social/Sharing |

What a cool piece of history, Alex! Frank is underrated for sure. You can't beat the combination of toys, rockets, superheroes and comics all in one piece! A young boy's dream (at least till he finds out about girls). And yes, what a brilliant purchase you've made!

It's a cool piece, congrats :) The Supermobile was used in the comics when Supes lost his powers in Action comics #481-483 fighting Amazo.... :)

I love the nostalgia, awesome! I remember the Supermobile, maybe not this exact one, during the Super Powers Figure collection during the eighties. Bravo!
