Description(1981) Mike Mignola Thor vs Loki pin-up on 15"x20" art board. For me the ultimate Mignola piece had to be a page from Thor #408-409 or a Thor themed pin-up. This is without a doubt my favorite early Mignola. Mignola was first published in The Comic Reader #183 September 1980 and I have to wonder if he did this pin-up for the fanzine. Even at 21 years old and a year before Mignola would graduate from art school, his wonderfully unique style was readily apparent in this piece. I really dig the amount of ink on this board, the shadowing of Thor's face, the exaggerated outward flair of feathers on Thor's helmet, and Loki's expression. You can almost see Thor struggling to get his right hand forward and ready to receive his trusty Mjölnir. I love it! Social/Sharing |

That's fantastic" I love seeing Mignola Marvel art. You can see some early genius in his work that would evolve into one of the most important comic creators of the past 20 years. Bravo.

I love these early drawings from Mike's art school days. It's still amazing to me how many of these things are floating around and how many more continue to surface. Even though Mike broke in to the industry as an inker, it's evident from these wonderful drawings that he was a very talented, original, and highly stylized illustrator. What's really funny to me is that before Hellboy and before anyone really cared about Mike's artwork, you could get these pieces for next to nothing. Now they pop up for sale at pretty crazy prices. This is a great one! Congratulations!

Early piece indeed! You can tell he hasn't quite found his style yet- but it's on the horizon! Great piece!

For sure! and I much prefer his first 15 or so years over where he finally landed...

This is an amazing piece. Although Mignola's Hellboy work gets a lot of attention, I really like his art from the1980s that he did with Marvel such as this piece and the Incredible Hulk. Good stuff!

Fanastic earlly Mignola! Love the whole layout of the scene! Add Mignola's thick blacks and clean lines and you have...a winnah!
