I grew up reading the Sunday comics as well as our standard superhero fare. One of my favorites was �Pogo.� Pogo was created by Walt Kelly in 1948 and was syndicated from 1949 to 1975, at one point rehang 500 newspapers. Kelly passed away in 1973, and his wife and son continued the strip for two years before ending it in July of 1975. Not many people know about Pogo any more, but back in the day, it was pretty popular.

Although it looked like a funny animal strip, Pogo was much more layered. The strip worked for children as well as adults � sometimes in the same day. While Pogo was generally a comment on current society, it was sometimes political, sometime satire, and sometimes just funny. The political satire had the strip moved to the editorial pages at times, and was censored at others. I don�t think I understood all of those, but it didn�t stop me from reading it each and every day. There were an incredible number of characters introduced over the 27 years. At times, Kelly created new characters to satirize current political stars. But, the primary players were Pogo Possum, Howland Owl, Churchy LaFemme, and Albert Alligator, among others.

Over the many years that Pogo was in syndication, there were many quotes that carried on far beyond Pogo�s lifetime. The most famous was �we have met the enemy and he is us�, which was used in Kelly�s attack on McCarthyism.

I had a opportunity to grab a Sunday with Owl and Churchy and jumped at the chance.

You're right - it's sad that not many people remember Pogo anymore. It was such a great, multi-layered strip in its day. Congrats on finding such a nice example!
