Description"Over the past couple of issues, Gene had slowly moved away from the rectangular panels that were then comics’ usual fare. [...] In some ways, this approach may have been the early honing of a double-edged sword, because I’ve long wondered if the increasingly irregular panel shapes didn’t confuse some of the younger readers we needed to support the book...but, at that time, influenced by fan reaction to Steranko’s work, Stan was encouraging artists and writers to be experimental, to try daring new ways of telling a story...and this was Colan’s."--Roy Thomas : Doctor Strange Masterworks Vol. 03 p07 Sometimes it's like being struck by lightning when a page is offered. With this page it was the case... ;-) Thanks a lot K.! Social/Sharing |

Colan let loose on visuals and angles, this could only happen on Dr Strange! A feast for the eyes, indeed!...

Wow! I love this Doctor Strange page by Gene Colan and Tom Palmer. The quirky panel design really allows the art much more freedom, enabling unusual panels like the first long thin panel of Clea trying to fly, and the second panel of Stephen Strange trying to suppress Clea's impulse out of fear she will expose her existence to evil doers. Colan's mastery of anatomy and design allowed him to more fully express himself with these new shapes. Palmer's strong inks were the perfect match for Colan's flamboyant pencils. Fantastic pick-up, congrats!
