DescriptionBeautiful and extremely rare 1948 Pogo presyndication/tryout daily for the New York Star, featuring Pogo, Owl & Albert. This wonderful example was numbered by Kelly as “No. 20”. Although this shows that it was the 20th strip of the tryout dailies, it ultimately saw publication January 7th 1949 as the 82nd daily (the 100th and final Pogo daily of the New York Star was published January 28th 1949)...one of the oldest/earliest Pogo dailies/artwork in existence...Pogo and the rest of the Okefenokee-crew were invented by Walt Kelly in 1942 and saw their first appearance on the pages of the first issue of Animal Comics. In 1948, when Kelly became the art director of the “New York Star”, he did a series of 30+ “Tryout-Dailies” in order to pitch his swamp universe as a newspaper comic strip. These tryouts were numbered continuously and ultimately all published, although not in their original order. Pogo only ran for less than 4 months (October 4th 1948 - January 28th 1949) on the pages of the “Star”, but was ultimately picked up for syndication by the Post-Hall-Syndicate, with the first daily being published May 16th 1949.
