DescriptionGoing through the flat files and portfolios recently and found this little gem! In 1984 Dave Stevens was a guest at that years Comix Fair in Houston. My friend Mark and I drove over to Houston from San Antonio just because Dave would be there. We were fans of his Rocketeer comic story which by then had three or four installments completed. Dave was just the nicest guy you would ever want to meet and we got to hang out with him for most of the afternoon. He had even brought a portfolio full of Rocketeer originals which were just amazing to see in person. During the afternoon, he even asked us to watch his table so he could shop for comic books in the dealers room! On his return we both asked him to do a sketch for us, I asked for the Rocketeer and Mark got a Bettie which I will post here once Mark scans it for me. If memory serves, he wanted to charge us $5.00 each but we insisted on paying him $10.00 since he took his time doing them. Halfway through the Bettie sketch, he didn't like what he had done, crumpled it up and started all over, ever the perfectionist. Over the years Dave became a good friend and I bought many more of his originals, usually directly from him at SDCC!Social/Sharing |

I was there at that Comix Fair show too Glynn! Was in love with his Rocketeer and had the same wonderful experience meeting Dave there. He was such a sweetheart! Wish I had met you then too my friend!

My sentiments too! We must have seen each other many times that day...but it would be many years down the line before we truely met. And you are absolutely correct, Dave was a sweetheart, just the nicest and most approachable guy ever! Gone way too soon!

Great story. And one of the best Rocketeer sketches I've ever seen. I know it's a treasured, personal piece, but if you ever decide to sell it I would be honored to be considered.
