DescriptionCable Color TestAbout a year ago, I lost out on a Rob Liefeld prelim for New Mutants #87 cover featuring a nearly finished original art cover for Cable’s first appearance issue by an amount of under $100. At the time it was absolutely devastating, put me in a weird funk for a few days. I was so close to having such a monumental piece of art for a modest amount of money but still attainable. This was really early in my comic art collecting experience and didn’t really know a lot of lessons that I have since learned. I am still by no means any expert but have now been through a few cycles and learned how to better find and check desired pieces. The loss led me to find other venues and opportunities elsewhere. My partner encouraged me to seek out pieces that mean as much if not much more than the NM Cable prelim (which at the time checked a lot of the boxes for me). It was through that loss that led me to focus and find more meaningful pieces and set me on this journey of discovering this site, meeting great members from here, hunting down a Sienkiewicz DEMON BEAR and Davis PSYLOCKE piece, and figuring out much better venues for finding the pieces that really mean something. This piece from X-Force #8 is an amazing representation of the key piece I lost out on and brings much joy today to have in my collection. It may not be an original Rob Liefeld 1st Cover appearance of Cable but is a color test prelim by Steve Buccellato for a pinup that Liefeld did at the end of an issue that tells Cable’s origin. I really enjoy seeing how a colorist tests out pigments with the coded markers and to get a cool peek behind the curtain on the process. Funny (not COMICal but amusing) how after a good start to my new hobby of comic art collecting that a piece I got easily for under $150 stands nicely for my checklist compared to that missed massive piece. It ended up being a good thing to have lost out on for the journey it has sent me out in. Social/Sharing |

Cables indomitable figure stands in defiance of what will come in the future. His color scheme is a defining trait as his solemn demeanor is often reflected in how he plays off the other characters in X-Force.

Oh man, it has happened to me many times bud! Some bids I lost by $1 :( Your Collection is amazing, and I know you'll have many more opportunities to own just as good pieces if not better. Beautiful Prelim of one of the best splashes of Cable by Liefeld, great get!!

It's always tough losing out on a piece especially when there is a personal connection but I've got to say this one is fantastic and full of nostalgia from this era! Congrats and thanks for sharing.
