DescriptionWhen Marvel began publishing comic adaptations of Conan adventures in the early 70's, I suppose I was not the only one to rush to the bookstore and buy paperback copies of the original R.E. Howard stories. One of my distractions when reading them was to imagine who would be the right artist for each one, if ever Barry Windsor-Smith was to abandon the series before having completed the canon, which I could not envision, but then, of course, came to happen to my everlasting regret, but I digress... Anyway, when I read the Scarlet Citadel, I first cast Jim Starlin as the guy most likely to, doubtlessly based on the very commendable job he had done on a Conan story in Savage Tales, some time ago. But, by the time the story was finally put in comic form and I read the adaptation by Frank Brunner, I happily acknowledged him as the perfect choice! With sword and sorcery in equal measure, this epic tale of the days of King Conan has more than enough twists and turns and grandiose action to satisfy even the more blasé readers! And, let's be honest, Frank Brunner gives his whole here, as committed on his pen and brush that Conan is on his sword! The density of the page, the depth, the details, the tension on every face, the fracas of the melee and, above all, the incredible, majestic, merciless, towering presence of King Conan who gives a credible impression of being able to slash a whole army by himself! Oh, boy, what a thrill!... In my Frank Brunner wantlist, this very story was on top, alongside his Dr Strange stuff. So, yes, I'm happy! Social/Sharing |

This is perfection!! And frankly, I'm relieved that others took over for BWS... the best Conan illustrators were yet to come!!

Ah, David... I was young and foolish then, and I happily admit there is an impressive cast of artists that left (still leave) their mark on our friendly (of sorts) Cimmerian!... Even then, I still have BWS at the top of my list! Oh, and thanks for your appreciation!

As you wrote, Brunner gave this issue his all, and he made it easily one of the most memorable issues of SSoC.

Thanks Timothy! My own SSoC 30 copy is bruised and battered: I have read this story so many times and still come back to it regularly...

Conan has always been an amazingly inspiring character for the great artists who worked on his adventures. And that's the result: Brunner at his finest!

Thanks Davide! It really takes the original page to fully appreciate how powerful the art of Frank Bruner is. The quality of the paper and printing on Marvel mags was really really low, then...

Brilliant work by Brunner! His drawings are so lush and vivid that they make you feel like you're there. Love all the detail Brunner puts in every panel! Congrats!

Thanks Bill! I don't remember having seen other Conan stories by Brunner, which is a shame! I agree with you: his was a powerful vision, here!

Now I know why my SSOC collection is in tatters. Would pore over as a kid. Reading over and over and marveling at the art. Outstanding.

Thanks John! I'm afraid my own copy is not in good shape either...
