I completely missed the original Doom Patrol run. Like a lot of folks in my general age range, I got introduced to them in New Teen Titans 13 with that amazing George Perez cover. Then I went back and found the Showcase re-introduction as some of the first back issues I hunted for at John's Comic Closet on the eastside of Indy.

Then, 1987 came into view and Paul, Steve, and Gary brought them roaring back to life. It was a short-lived run for these three but man did it ever wake me up to the potential for them. This was Steve's last issue and the beginning of his transition to an in-demand cover artist.

Rumor has it that he wasn't super happy on DP and the pages de miss a bit of the zing he brought to his Legion work. But, Lightle with a little less zing is still an outstanding, exciting storyteller. That panel featuring Tempest is proof of that.

Bought this during a ComicLink auction in fall 2024.

I agree with you that even a displeased Lightle remains a strong artist (though it's not rumor, it's well documented). This page is pure proof of that as it is his last issue, he did not care anymore and yet, anybody not knowing that will think it's a strong example.
