DescriptionA confession: I didn’t read much Hawkman back in the sixties, and I don’t know much about him or about Murphy Anderson. That said, Hawkman is an intriguing character with all of the variations on his mythology, and Murphy Anderson claimed that he felt most at home drawing this character. The top panel - to my eye, anyway - is a killer. And the final panel mirrors the cover of this issue except for the placement of Hawkgirl (thus, I imagine, the “See cover” notation). Comic art is often about nostalgia, but it’s also - ultimately - about great images, and this page, I believe, is filled with fine imagery and clear, 1960’s story-telling. Plus, the Matter Master and his mentachem have made their way through DC history into the 21st century. Oy! Finally, I love the editor’s note on the Cullinan diamond; I had to look it up, and he got it right. Social/Sharing |

Just because someone is up to their waist in gook you still should not get within punching range while gloating.

I never read DC comics and I must confess that I am not familiar with Murphy Anderson's art. The Mentachem rod I had to look up as well. This is what I found on the DC Database:
Mandrill (the Matter Master) accidentally discovered a new chemical, Mentachem, which he then fashioned into a wand for his own criminal gain. The wand enabled him to reshape, transmute, or levitate any matter.
Thanks for broadening my horizons.

I'm a Marvel guy but I read all the DC standards as a kid and Hawkman has long been one of my favorite DC characters. This page is glorious and that top panel could be framed by itself. Bravo!
