DescriptionIn general, I'm not a huge fan of cover homages/recreations. But, then there is the wonderful Fred Hembeck take on the cover to Manhunter Special 1. It's almost a shot by shot recreation but what makes it special is that bit of Hembeck magic. Fred created the piece in his trademark style and it works beautifullyThis piece is a bit oversized. It's around 13 x 17 but my scanner isn't. So a bit of the border got chopped off. Trust that this looks terrific in person. Bought this from Albert Moy in fall 2024. Many thanks to James Siegel for flagging it via his terrific Fred Hembeck Destroys Facebook group. Social/Sharing |

There are things you didn't know you needed in the world until they appear, and then you can't imagine a world without it.
This is that.

an awesome homage recreation as only Fred can do! Like you, also not a huge fan of cover recreations straight up, but with Fred it's always more of a reinterpretation and homage than a recreation so I find the ones he's done so much more enjoyable to look at online even though I've yet to obtain one for my collection. great grab, congrats!

It's sort of like a Weird Al cover tune, right? I mean, you gotta wonder at what point artists start thinking, "Is -this- the one? Is this the piece that will -finally- make my work a subject of exploration by the great Hembeck / Weird Al...?" And while my -guess- is that Walt was probably(?) not thinking that here (maybe?), it sure is a fantastic choice by Fred. It doesn't strike me at all as the "usual" kind of recreation he does (undoubtedly because of Simonson's indelible and often "non-traditional comic book-y" style), which makes it twice as compelling as usual (which is pretty darn compelling)! Superb pick up, Christopher! Congrats!
