DescriptionSize: 22 x 17Year: 1994 I had acquired this directly from Greg some years back and then let it go during my great purge. It was one of the pieces I always regretted letting go and thankfully it has made its way back to the collection. Way back in the day, Greg Capullo taking over Spawn was a terrible moment for me. I loved the Toddfather’s art and was one of those definitely not on board with a new guy taking over the reins. As fate would have it, Greg grew on me in quick time and I loved his column found in Wizard magazine teaching kids like myself the basics of drawing. To say he is now one of my favorite artists is an understatement. It has taken some time for me to organize my thoughts on why I love this piece so much considering I had owned his other prime pieces on Spawn with the Toddfather and Miki on inks. Firstly, this is the best representation of Greg’s work in my opinion. He inked it himself and you can see how different it is compared to when others ink over him. Secondly, its Angela a fabulous redhead from the mind of Neil Gaiman. I truly believe that Gaiman’s work in issue 9 of Spawn and through the Angela mini series expanded the Spawn universe tremendously and added much needed mythology. It also explains why I lost interest in the main Spawn series after issue 100. The legal dispute between Gaiman and the Toddfather resulted in Gaiman regaining rights to Angela and then it being sold to Marvel where she is now Thor’s sister…… sigh…. if Gaiman and Todd found a middle ground and worked together on the spawn universe, we could have had something special. At least this piece has returned home! Social/Sharing |
