DescriptionThis is actually the back/front of a terrific Comic Art Live pickup this year: the 'Avengers Jam' piece (elsewhere in my gallery). I thought this worthy of its own spotlight! My guess is that this may be an unpublished prelim for one of the 'Hulk' covers Frank did back in 2008/2009. The previous owner said he picked it up right around that time, and it sure looks to be a different take on ‘Hulk’ #9 (see 'Additional Images')... Really fun to see the full gamut of Frank's workflow here on a single piece; from rough (background action) pencils to tight (Hulk figure) pencils to inked work. A MOST sincere thank you once again, Brian, for this terrific Comic Art Live pick up, and for letting me add my first Cho in style! Social/Sharing |

Cho is far from only a GGA artist. His lines -- as seen even in his prelims, and palpable here -- are reminiscent of the greats. His irreverence towards life's monotonies is belied by his reverence towards the giants who lifted the comic and fantasy art medium. GREAT eye as always, Jason !

Thank you, Steve - I am in complete agreement (as usual :) ). Frank most certainly has that classic "spark" of talent that extends well beyond the Good Girl Art that he is (understandably) probably best known for, and he's positively Frazetta-like (yeah, I went there) in his preternatural facility in multiple genres and formats. Like, when I was a kid and discovering Frazetta, right? My brain would explode when I saw his paintings. "Oh," I would think, "THAT'S what he does." And then I would see his pen and ink sci-fi covers and think, "Oh, no - I guess THAT'S what he does." And then his strip work, Burroughs stuff, more of his paintings... Each time, my brain had its feet kicked out from underneath it (er, you know what I mean :) ). Mr. Cho is able to pull that off, too, to my eyes.
His pen and ink work can be positively illustrative at the highest "fine art" standard and level; his ballpoint pen work is revolutionary; his cartooning and undeniable gift with caricature is whimsical and expert; his expansion into painting... Frank is a Renaissance Man, and I feel really fortunate to get two fine examples of his work on one piece of paper. And you know what else moves me? All of your fine comments. Thank you again, very sincerely, Steve (and all)!

The ladies are hammering Hulk here, but look how broad his figure stretches with the classic Cho Hulk-natomy and inking on him. Looks like done for issue #9 with Hulk unbound!

That sure does look like the cover prelim. A twofer! Don't you love when you get Bonus Art on back? It's a great, energetic bonus. Congrats!

Word, bird! And although I already knew it was there (indeed, it was a big factor in me taking the plunge), I was unprepared for its scope and awesomeness (at 11x17), and its glimpse into his process, with scaffolding thrown up everywhere, some paint on a few of the walls, some finished tile inlay... And then you turn the page over and see his razor-sharp, finished Iron Man. Really cool. Thank you (as always), J (and everyone)!

Fun process piece. Also amusing to note that even at such an early stage, Frank manages to (pun intended) squeeze in (big) T&A shots ^^

Thanks for the plug, Jason, you're a good soul!
You know, as much as I like the front of this piece, I think I'm really starting to love this backside even more. It's just beautiful line art and I love how parts of it are finished while others are stil loose and spontaneous! You definitely scored with this one, man!

Thank you, Rubèn (and you are most welcome :) )! You are most certainly not alone in your assessment - 100%. The Iron Man was what really grabbed me "on the day", and I thought the Hulk was a VERY cool bonus. But the more time I spend with it, the more I find myself doting upon and drawn to Frank's backside (he says, in deadpan Cho fashion...). Thank you once more (always!), Rubèn (and everyone)!

The ladies are miffed. Hulk tried to pull a fast one and not wear his stretchy pants.

Dude big bonus on the back! Maybe have Cho finish one day? In any case, not needed! Adding a couple more characters and you got 2 jams on 2 sides! We don't see that every day :) CongratS!

This is so great, I wonder why Frank never finished it!
