Description

WHA-BOOM! The Avengers have attracted the ire of the Greek gods and are prisoners of Hades' minions. Namor sneaks into the prison in disguise and frees Black Knight, who on this page uses his Ebony Blade to free Captain Marvell, then Captain America, and then (regrettably, for Avengers fans) Dr. Druid.

I've always loved Tom Palmer's Adamsy way with light effects. His inks could overwhelm the penciler's own style, but that made him a perfect finisher for the loose breakdowns that John Buscema was turning in for 80s Avengers. I've been hoping to get a good first page by both Big John and Tom for a few years. This page nicely checks both boxes, particular since its mythological setting recalls Buscema's famed work on Conan.

Panels 1,2, and 4 become and "arts and crafts" project due to the careful use of screentone for texture. I don't think of Namor as a small person, but next to She Hulk, he looks tiny! A notation at the bottom of the page asks Palmer to "add Captain Marvel to panel 4."

Looks great like Buscema and Palmer was drawing a D&D adventure with this old castle scene right out of b&w movies!
