DescriptionWelcome back to Shemp's Gallery. Hope everyone had a nice Holiday. Now back to our regularly scheduled program. A new piece every Sunday. This month Shemp's Gallery is featuring DC house ads. Being a big fan of DC Comics I read almost everything they published. I love DC house ads. House ads would be used to promote anything from a new title, to a new creative team on an existing title or an upcoming storyline within a title. In this months showcase you will see one each of the above. So let's start. Classic! I mean classic, house ad from 1984 for Jemm Son of Saturn. This was a new 12 part maxi-series with art by Gene Colan written by Greg Potter. I never read this book but man I remember this house ad. It was everywhere, it seemed to be in every book in 1984. I bought this from ComicConnect a few years ago. I was looking to add a Gene Colan piece and needed something that fit my collection. A couple of years prior to this piece a SilverBlade house ad piece was up for auction at Heritage and I completely forgot to bid on it. Aye aye aye. I thought I had lost the chance to add a Colan piece that fit my collection. Luckily this one popped up and I thought this was even better than the SilverBlade ad. 1984 Jemm Son of Saturn house ad by artist Gene Colan and Klaus Janson PS. When I bought this from ComicConnect I knew there was an overlay, you could see it in the scan, even though it was never mentioned. To my surprise there was additional art underneath the overlay(third pic). It was never shown or mentioned in the listing. More Gene Colan art for my buck. Woohoo! I found a DC Releases from Sept '84 that features the full page of published art. Pretty cool. Social/Sharing |

Wow! Jemm is quintessential Colon, and the art under the overlay is a sight to see. And this is a much bigger get than the Silverblade house ad in my opinion. Fantastic!

This ad was all over and on the biggest DC books. I never read it. The kids would tease you that you had Jem and the Holograms if they saw that comic and might give me a schoolyard beat down. The art itself on this is killer and the dark look of Colan is very effective here to make this image the most memorable for me.

I never read it either, but the ad sure made it look cool.

But...wouldn't they give you a schoolyard beat down anyway, just for letting on that you were into comics?
I too never read the series, but enjoyed flipping through the issues at the store every month. I also LOVE house ads and have always felt the BIg Two have been stupid to not use them for so many years now. While it is a great surprise to get all the extra art up top, from a publishing standpoint they definitely made the right choice by covering it up. Way too busy and hard to focus on it with all the art displayed. Great piece overall!

Beat downs when you brought your Chewbacca action figure carrying bandolier or the Spock helmet to school. Double beat down and noogies if you did both. Certain comics were cool in school, just don't let that old bat Mrs. Henderson catch you with them. CGC 2.0 when you got it back and detention assured.
