DescriptionI was a Joe fanatic in the 80s. What's funny and anyone who's been part of the series and it's lore knows a few key things from those days.(1) Your buddies who watched the cartoon didn't get G.I. Joe. Only Larry Hama got G.I. Joe and if you didn't read the comics you could only partially understand the hype. Plus, cartoon guys thought Duke was awesome. Duke stunk. Snake Eyes was awesome. Destro was awesome. The cartoon missed that. (2) Issue #2. Anytime today when retailers/fans/whomever talks about underordering of issues past #1 this is the first thing I think of. I still have my copy of G.I. Joe #1 - bought by my dad on a business trip as I didn't discover the series until issue #7 and needed to complete the run. I didn't get issue #2 until about 2003 bc it was impossible to find prior to that. Dealers running ads in Marvel would list issue #1 for $5 or $10. #2 was $50 (iirc FF #48 was also $50 - how's that for context!). (3) Issue #35. This is a a me only story. We were on a family trip in Halifax when this issue came out. We walked by the comic shop 8-9pm and saw a stack - maybe 50 copies of it - in the store window with the "on sale tomorrow! John Byrne cover!". We went back the next day (it was literally 5 mins from our hotel) and they were sold out. I didn't get this one until probably 2007, mostly because it reminded me how popular the series and anything Byrne touched was in that era. To this art (if you're read this far, you know Joe). John Royle's been doing the variants to the impressive IDW series for several years and I've seen at least a dozen of them that I wanted. Was so fortunate to get this one with a couple of my favorites - Flint, Beach Head, Zartan, Lady Jaye and an awesome Baroness. Royle really captures the action and spirit of the Joes (and Cobras!)
