DescriptionTHIS MONSTER HAS FINALLY ARRIVED.... Oil on Linen Size 63" x 63" ....160 cm x 160 cmPhil comments the following on his Instagram account: Studio shot of a piece I made for the NPG's annual show; this was for 2003 or so. Unfortuantely I gave it a ridiculous title: THE MALE IMPERATIVE TO ASSERT WHILE THE FEMALE IS CONTENT TO REMAIN SUBMISSIVE which was a mistake. It was not only dumb but seemed like a kind of attention-seeking. It was embarrassing once it was up on the gallery wall. Phil explained this to me, about this painting: Uneven Steven he was a friend of my wife He was a total nutcase, but also a very intelligent likeable guy. I painted him many times, first as the Johnny Badhair character, and then as himself. I will send you some of the other paintings I did; there are quite a few. And I did many, many drawings. I have them somewhere but have not seen them in a long time. He did blow himself up in the end. I think he is still alive, but much reduced. My interest is often how people express themselves through their bodies and their body language (that sounds so bland!)- Uneven Steven was abit of a genius in this regard- Well that painting is pretty much the peak of that era; the most ambitious painting I had done up to that point. I have some very funny photographs of Steven that were not used; let me see if I can find some. I have had what could be called a few 'muses'; people I retyrned to many times to paint. My father, Uneven Steven... those are actually the most prominent two. Horacio...That painting is the largest figure I have ever painted; still. I was going through a very ambitious period, then (early 2000s)- I will see if I can find a picture of it hanging in the National Portrait Gallery. There are some photos for sure. Social/Sharing |

It's so impressive that Hale gets inspiration from just people around him which speaks to his eye to see what may be ordinary to you or me and turn it into an extraordinary celebration of humanity. It plumbs the depths of the "heroes" and presents it back to us so we can recognize our strengths and weaknesses, but always with a noble spirit as we strain and struggle through our existance. The size is extraordinary and amplifies his message that can not be denied.

That's a nice one. And stretched! Most of mine are on masonite or board. I do have a few early ones stretched, but they are wonky. This one looks constructed well, it's huge, and the figure is awesome. Nice get. A+
