DescriptionMartin Simmonds"Death" 2024 11" x 17" Mixed Media on paper Fuck. I love this piece. This was the piece from the Cadence debacle I referred to in another post so I won't repeat the whole story. Instead I want to talk about the piece for a little. I waited a long time for this. The idea and composition are totally from Martin's mind, all I suggested was the character. When I first saw the image there were things that bothered me about it. Part of that might be that I'm a prick and part of it might be the situation that surrounded this piece and what it ultimately cost me. The nose and chin of Death are much more defined in person. The image doesn't do it justice. The hair on Death also shows the strokes better in person. The pose of all three characters is perfect. The baby doesn't look real. Initially, that irritated me, but as I studied this piece more (and it deserves to be read like a book) the form of the baby is what makes it palatable. This reads as a sad piece, but if the baby looked more real, it might be a horrifying piece. Death is an active participant in the scene, but she isn't particularly active. She's holding the baby, but she's not clutching it tightly or even holding it lovingly. Instead, it almost seems more like she's guiding the baby towards something. She's also not actively restraining the old woman. She's not blocking the old woman from the baby, she's gently holding the old woman's hand away from the child. It's a reminder she can't go backwards, not a forceful or painful attack. The old woman is a sad, but not pitiable character. She also appears surreal in many ways, a reminder of a person perhaps more so than an actual person. There is regret there. You might not be able to tell in the image, but the entire composition is connected by the fabric of the old woman's dress, and it is indeed real fabric on the piece. It's a lace looking fabric that stretches from the woman's mid-body as part of the nightgown and right across the bottom of the image. It makes me feel like it goes from a night gown to a wedding dress to a baby bonnet almost. It's a wonderful touch, and I'm grateful to have this piece in my collection. Social/Sharing |
