Description

Walter Hale (1869-1917) was a turn-of-the-last-century illustrator and printmaker. Hale spent a great deal of time in Europe, and was sadly killed during WWI. This piece is marked “The Rialto, Venice”, referring to the Rialto Bridge, in Venice, Italy, long before it became the tourist attraction that it is today. The piece is signed and dated 1902, with a “Harper & Brothers” stamp. While I do not know exactly where the piece saw print, it was likely in either Harper’s magazine, or one of the books published by Harpers. The penwork is tremendous, showing Hale’s virtuosity clearly. He barely used any contour lines, as the piece is made up almost entirely with hatched lines. It’s really quite stunning person. Measuring 14¼”x 10¼”, the illustration is in solid Fine condition, with only traces of a previous matting in the margins as the only flaw. Stellar early illustration penwork. $150.00 + 11.00 Priority shipping.
