DescriptionHenry Major (1889-1948) was a Hungarian-born artist, known world-wide for his celebrity caricatures. He worked initially in London and Vienna, later moving to the United States, where he became well-known for traveling around the country in the 1920s, caricaturing politicians, businessmen, musicians, and actors, who would usually sign the drawings that Major did of them. I’m quite pleased to be able to offer one such caricature, of the Academy Award-winning actor, Wallace Beery. Beery appeared in over 250 films, and his MGM contract stipulated that he would be paid one dollar more than any other actor, which made him the highest paid actor in the world at the time. Beery won his Academy Award for The Champ, the 1931 film co-starring Jackie Cooper. But it gets even better: In 1938, Major and Arthur “Bugs” Baer collaborated on a limited-edition book titled Hollywood. The book was limited to 800 copies, and featured Major’s caricatures, accompanied by humorous commentary supplied by Baer. This 12½”x 9¼” drawing appeared in the book, with Baer’s caption: “He is not his brother’s kipper”, referring to Beery’s actor brother, Noah Beery, Sr. The piece is drawn in pencil or charcoal and features a mustachioed Beery in a three-quarter view. Major has signed the piece at Beery’s abdomen, and Beery has signed below that as “Wally Beery”. The artwork is in VG condition, with a dog-eared lower left corner, some pushpin holes, and a little bit of tape residue on the right edge. Given how Major traveled around, these flaws are no unexpected. This is a great piece, with wonderful provenance, and given that I’ve seen Beery’s autograph sell for more than $200 alone, I’m offering it at a bargain price. $125.00 + 10.00 Priority shipping.Social/Sharing |
