Description

Camillus Kessler (1883-1950) was one of the unsung, wonderful stylists on the newspaper page. Like a number of other panel cartoonists, Kessler drew multiple panels over a number of decades, with one of them, Seems Like Yesterday, running under multiple titles, including Home Town Echoes. Kessler�s cartoons wear often regional in nature, echoing back to a previous time, like Gaar Williams� Among Us Folks. Stylistically, Kessler employed a bold contour line, breaking down forms into shapes, and applying flat shading lines as a way of creating light and shadow. This is very much a Phil May type of approach, and it works beautifully in Kessler�s panels. This Seems Like Yesterday panel is from October 16, likely 1939, thought I have not been able to verify the exact date. The feature changed titles to Home Town Echoes in 1942, and this panel is not from 1940 or �41, so� It�s a great piece showing a young lad sawing wood, while his father goes on and on about how lucky he is. Some things never change. The drawing is really quite lively and beautiful. As a bonus, Kessler practiced his lettering on the reverse, referencing baseball and politics in the process. Measuring 11�x 12��, the cartoon is in excellent condition. Uncommon stuff by a forgotten great. $100.00 + 11.00 Priority Mail shipping.
