DescriptionWilliam Glackens (1870-1938) was an American realist painter and one of the founding members of the Ashcan school of painting in the early part of the last century. Like his brother Louis, William Glackens also worked as a magazine and newspaper illustrator, though he later focused on painting, unlike brother Louis who stayed in the pen & ink game. Glackens’ paintings are held in all of the well-known museums, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Metropolitan Museum, and the Brooklyn Museum. The Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia has some of Glackens’ most well-known work, as Glackens helped Albert Barnes put his collection together.Williams Glackens’ magazine and newspaper work is really quite uncommon, especially in the hands of comic art collectors. I don’t think I’ve seen more than three of his originals in 40+ years of collecting. This piece accompanied a short story by Eleanor Stuart and appeared in the December 1901 issue of Scribner's magazine. The caption for the drawing is, "He then paid the full sum of 500 francs into my palm." There's a definite Phil May vibe to this drawing, and I wonder if Glackens was influenced by May's work, as many American illustrators and cartoonists at the time were, including folks like Billy DeBeck. The drawing measures 9½”x 7¼” and is in solid Fine condition, with just a small piece out of the lower right corner. The paper color is a creamy off-white. Incredibly scarce stuff by one of the modern American turn-of-the-last-century masters. $600.00 + 8.00 Priority Mail shipping. Insurance, if desired, will be extra. Social/Sharing |
