Description

Bill Wheeler was a cartoonist for the Los Angeles Herald, most well-known for his Sportoonix daily strip style sports cartoon. Wheeler was a colleague of Willard Mullin during his early days in L.A., and hung around with other L.A. cartoonists, such as a certain Mr. Herriman. Sportoonix was done in a class bigfoot style. In this example, from December 31, 1927, you can see a combination of Herriman and Goldberg influencing Wheeler. Just look at the doctor’s hand and that little landscape on the wall. A total Herriman vibe. This strip has to do with soon-to-be-ending college football season, with the football fan widow crying in the doorway. The drawing is quite wonderful, with lively pen work. This is the only Wheeler original that I’ve ever run across. Measuring 7½”x 18¼”, you can see the light stain in the upper right corner. The bottom right corner is cracked and has been repaired with archival linen tape on the reverse. The art area is in Fine condition. Sweet, sweet early L.A. cartooning. $100.0 + 15.00 first class shipping.
