DescriptionI am a big fan of the work of Mal(colm) Eaton (1902-1974). His newspaper strip, Peter Piltdown was created in August 1935 and was distributed by Miller Services, a small distribution company in Canada. At the same time, the strip was syndicated by the New York Tribune, the newspaper that carried it in New York City. Neither companies were exactly a powerhouse in the syndication/distribution field, which meant that Eaton’s creation was not as well-known as it might have been. The name of the strip changed a couple of times over the years, later winding up in the pages of Boy's Life, under the title of Rocky Stoneaxe. Peter Piltdown never made it into the upper echelon of comic strips, but I've always found Eaton’s approach to be both charming and hilarious. He had a scratchy pen style, which gave a lot of life to the drawing. Combine the drawing style with his quirky characters, and you wind up with something very sweet. If you would like to read my blog post about Eaton, which pictures this strip, please:Check out Mal Eaton's Scratchy Big Feet. As I’ve noted with other pieces, I am in the process of trimming my collection a bit. One of the pieces that I’m offering up for sale is the earliest Peter Piltdown strip I’ve ever seen. It is also the only hand-colored example I’ve seen in 40+ years of collecting. Dated February 21, 1937, this Sunday page ran about a year and a half into the strip’s life. The strip pictures Peter himself at the beginning and end of the narrative, but Oona is the real star here, as she traps a giant snow-bird, even though the trap was not sprung exactly as intended. The drawing is marvelous, especially the action scenes towards the end of the strip. That scratchy pen line of Eaton’s fits the activity of the strip perfectly. Eaton’s work is not at all common and there is a small group of die-hard collectors of his Sunday pages. This one is not cheap, but as I’ve mentioned, it’s likely the earliest example you’ll find, in addition to being the only hand-colored example that I’ve seen. Measuring 15¼”x 20”, the artwork is drawn on heavy illustration board. The piece is in solid Fine+ condition, with slightly rounded corners and a missing title stat. There is a slight be of light discoloration at the lower left area, but it’s not much. $600.00 + 22.00 first class shipping. Social/Sharing |
