Description

Michael Angelo Woolf (1837-1899) was a contemporary of the photographer Jacob Riis and fellow artist Phil May, all noted for their images of tenement scenes and street urchins. The British-born Woolf lived and worked in New York, and the city scenes he drew were derived from Brooklyn and Five Points. Woolf worked for Harper�s Weekly, Judge and LIFE magazines, depicting the lives of his street urchins through both humor and poignancy. Both May and Woolf died quite young, leaving a huge void in their reportage cartoon work. This wonderful and rare original pen & ink cartoon appeared in the December 23, 1886 issue of LIFE magazine. It depicts large, fat rats who have gotten into the Christmas stockings of these kids. The caption reads: �When Santa Claus fills out children�s stockings with brandy balls and other dainties, he doubtless has no idea what the result will be.� The result was clearly not to the liking of these poor kids. The drawing is quite beautiful, with some lovely pen work throughout, especially the cross-hatching work around the children. The image is slightly toned from a previous framing. You can also find slight glue remnants and paper tape on the back. There are some unfinished pencil sketches on the back as well. Measuring 6�"x near 8", the artwork is in solid VG condition, which is quite incredible given that it�s nearly 140 years old. $225.00 + 10.00 shipping.
