Description

Ad Reinhardt (1913-1967) is most well-known for his paintings in the New York School, AKA Abstract Expressionism. He is likely most famous for his "black" or "ultimate" paintings, which he believed was the end of painting. Reinhardt was shown at the Peggy Guggenheim Gallery, and was later represented by Betty Parsons, with solo exhibitions beginning in the 1940s. Reinhardt was also an active cartoonist, working in a graphic style primarily for the New Masses in the 1930s, and PM newspaper in the 1940s. Both left-leaning publications touted a strong stable of artists, and Reinhardt's war cartoons were quite powerful. He incorporated a lot of high-contrast shapes and marks, resulting in work that looks remarkably contemporary. His work in PM incorporated quite a bit of collage elements in the cartoons.

I am pleased to be able to offer a very rare example of Reinhardt’s political cartoon artwork. This piece is mostly made up of a sarcophagus collage image, with Hitler's dead head drawn on the board beneath the print. The image appears to be taken from an engraving of the sarcophagus of Queen Louise. This type of cartoon work is quite indicative of Reinhardt's political cartoons done for PM, the left-leaning newspaper that he worked for from 1942 to 1947. Given that Hitler committed suicide in 1945, that seems a good guesstimate as to the date of this piece.

Reinhardt's care with the China white watercolor reminds me of a piece of writing by Art Spiegelman. In part, Art wrote:

“Seeing this stuff again, it’s fascinating to find how little the cartoons are in person, and how jewel-like in their making. Because of their size, they seem quite humble. And while the ideas move from box to box, the visuals are collages of his modernist cartooning with old wood engravings. He used the Surrealism that he mocked in his text to invent a new form of comics as essays. When I walked into the gallery I realized how constructed these works are, how much attention it took to make them. This was a fully realized enterprise by somebody who really knew his business. You could see the loving craftwork. Reinhardt was making this art for reproduction, and when you see someone putting white paint on either side of a line to make it crisper, you know it’s somebody who really cares about that line.”

So to be clear, the only fully original drawing in this piece is Hitler’s head, along with Reinhardt’s signature. But this collage approach was a major element of his pre-painting work. The board measures 6”x 9”. You can see the toning on the board from a previous matting and framing. The collage element has a crease in it, most likely done by Reinhardt himself, as the element is firmly attached to the board. This is an oddball item, for sure, but Reinhardt’s cartoon work is exceedingly scarce. $650.00 + 11.00 shipping.
