Description

Garry Trudeau (1948- ) created the iconic Doonesbury comic strip in 1970, adding the Sunday page in 1971. In 1975, Doonesbury became the first comic strip to win the Pulitzer Prize. Trudeau has created a memorable cast of characters over the years, all the while skewering politicians with a sharp wit and fine drawing. It is amazing to think that Doonesbury has been with us for 55 (!) years, but there you have it! I�m pleased to be able to offer the first published Doonesbury strip that I�ve ever offered. This wonderful Sunday page is from October 26, 1980 and features Zonker and BD, though Zonk�s talking parts are in the throwaway section. The main action revolves around BD and Terry. It is a hilarious upshot of a gag, with Terry complaining about taking the ball again, for fear of getting �killed�. As we can see, Terry is no rocket scientist, and agrees to do BD a favor by delivering something to the endzone. The drawing is quite wonderful, with Trudeau�s fine line ink work. The condition is a solid Fine+, with some minor toning in the margins. My scan makes the tone appear darker than it really is. The Sunday page measures 16��x 23�.
