DescriptionOkay, you’ve heard me yammer on and on about George Lichty (1905-1983) in the past. And you know I devoted a blog post to someone I consider one of the greatest ink-slingers in the newspaper funnies pages. So I won’t rehash my effervescence about Lichty. If I have turned you into a fan by now, there may be no hope! But for all of you Lichtyites out there, I recently came into a nice batch of some of the earliest originals I have seen by the ink-slinging master. In the 1930s, while he was drawing Grin and Bear it, Lichty drew a lot of advertising cartoons for Botsford, Constantine and Gardner, a Portland-based advertising firm. I have not yet been able to find published examples of these advertising cartoons, but as best I can figure, they appeared in Advertising & Selling, a publication devoted to the advertising business. Lichty’s name comes up in a 1937 issue, so I put these two cartoons at circa 1937. All of the cartoons that I acquired relate to advertising, referring phrases such as: “The rule of three, 1+1+1” and “the fourth family”. You can see how Lichty's drawing at this point was boxier and more angular. There's a great weight to the figures, and while he maintains some figural looseness, he hasn’t quite gotten to that reckless abandon of his later work. The piece with the pastor measures 12”x 9¾” and is in Fine+ condition. The cartoon with the sales girls measures 12”x 11¼” and is also in VG condition. You can make out a faint water stain in the upper part of that second cartoon, barely going into the word balloon. Both cartoons are drawn with ink and litho crayon on Coquille board. Lichty’s 1930s cartoon originals have been wildly scarce before this, but I picked up this batch at a good price and I’m passing the savings onto fellow Lichtyite. Both cartoons for $100.00 + 15.00 shipping.Social/Sharing |
