DescriptionWarren Rockwell (1887-1911) was a book illustrator and cartoonist, doing work for Puck and LIFE magazines. He died after a brief illness of typhoid pneumonia at St. Vincent's Hospital, New York City, October 17, 1911. He was just 34 years of age.Rockwell created this wonderful meta-cartoon for the October 11, 1911 edition of Puck. The piece is titled "Cleaning up the Office", and subtitled, "Willie, the Boy, is Entrusted With the Task and Gets Away With it". Rockwell clearly had some fun with this one, with Willie cleaning up after himself. Here's a panel-by-panel narration: 1) "O, Gee, What a Job!" 2) "Well, I Suppose I Got to Make a Start!" 3) "T'ain't So Bad, After All!" 4) "These Vacuum Cleaners Don't Leave Nothin'!" 5) "Not Much Left!" 6) "Done a' Gee!" Rockwell used no White-Out (or China White correction paint) on the piece, but carefully planned where the vacuumed areas would not be. The entire piece is handled so cleverly, in that humor magazine style that we all know and love. There were so many cartoonists who passed away at far too young an age in those days. In Rockwell’s case, we really missed out on what he might have become. Measuring 22”x 16¼”, the cartoon is in solidly Fine shape, especially considering its age. Yes, there are three corner pieces missing, but they are far from the art area. The lower right panel does have an old repaired tear that goes into the panel, but does not touch the drawing at all. It was repaired with a paper patch, likely decades ago. The upper two corners have light creases that are barely visible from the front. There is a pinhole in the center of the sheet, between the third and fourth panels. The piece has the Puck stamp on the back, along with Rockwell’s name and address in New York City. It is possible that this is one of the very last cartoons that Rockwell created, given that he passed away less than a week after it was published. $300.00 + 22.00 shipping. SOLD! Social/Sharing |
