DescriptionCharles Rodrigues (1926-2004) was most well-known for his fairly twisted work in the National Lampoon, but his work also regularly appeared in Playboy and Cracked magazines. In addition, Rodrigues had two long-running comic strips, Charlie (a panel cartoon) and Casey the Cop. Rodrigues was known for both his off-beat sense of humor and his wonderful contour line work, with wonderfully scratchy and jagged edges. I’m pleased to offer a terrific and super-scarce example of Rodrigues’ Casey the Cop Sunday page from 1977. The strip only ran for two years and in all my years of collecting, I’ve only seen two Sunday pages from the feature. I have both of them. Since I yam culling the heard, one Sunday page will be enough for me. In this Sunday page, Casey chats with one of the strip’s regulars, Mrs. Medusa, about her missing (and legally dead) husband Leo. The dialogue has a bit of an “I Love Lucy” word-play aspect to it, and you can see Casey getting his full by the end. The dialogue is wonderful, but the drawing…. oh that drawing. If you dig expressive ink drawing, you’ll love this strip. It’s almost as if Rodrigues carved his figures out of ink. Mrs. Medusa’s floral housecoat is a thing to behold! The strip measures 14½”x 21¼”. Rodrigues worked on lightweight paper and taped a cover sheet/color guide to the piece, hinged at the back. You can see the tape stains coming through at the top. Rodriques was also pretty liberal with the White-Out, especially when getting rid of panel lines he deemed unnecessary. It was a part of his process. Signed twice; once in the hand-drawn logo panel, and again in the last panel, under Mrs. Medusa. Given Rodrigues’ prodigious output, I’m surprised at how relatively rare his originals are, but you just don’t see them show up for sale all that often. And Sunday pages, not at all. He remains, at least to me, one of the unheralded greats. Yes, there are flaws in this piece, but they are only due to Rodrigues’ process. $375.00 + 19.00 First Class shipping.Social/Sharing |
