Description

Joseph Parrish (1905-1989) started his professional cartooning career in Tennessee, working as a editorial cartoonist. In 1936, Parrish moved to Chicago and became the chief editorial cartoonist for the Chicago Tribune. He held that position until his retirement in 1970. Parrish was noted for his clean line approach, with a deft handling of hatching, cross-hatching and spotted blacks. He also knew how to hit the target in his cartoons, such as this political cartoon from 1940. Titled “Bluebeard’s Latest Proposal”, Hitler is pictured on one knee, proposing to Rumania. This cartoon was published in the Chicago Tribune on March 18, 1940, and by November of the same year, Romania joined the Axis powers. Four years later, Romania would be whistling a different tune, siding with the Allies for the remainder of WWII. The cartoon is quite powerful, with strong figure and pen work by Parrish. The diagonal composition, with the graphic quality of the bloody sword blade leading towards the figure of Rumania, who is backing away, makes a subtle-but-strong statement. Powerful stuff. Measuring 16”x 12”, the cartoon is in exquisite condition; at least Fine+. There is the lightest of toning/sunning, but that’s about it. The cartoon is signed by Parrish, and then inscribed and signed again in fountain pen a month after publication. This may be the best Joseph Parrish editorial cartoon I’ve ever seen. $235.00 + 17.00 shipping. SOLD!
