Description

Tom Gauld (b.1976) is a wonderful Scottish-born cartoonist/illustrator whose work appears in The Guardian, The New Yorker, The New York Times, and the The New Scientist, among others. He has such a wonderfully understated approach to cartooning and gag-delivery, with the writing as strong as the drawing. As I continue to pare down my five decades of collecting, my loss will be your gain, with this absolutely wonderful Gauld cartoon that appeared in the October 2017 issue of The New Scientist, a publication in the UK. Titled “Where The Wild Things Are Studied By Zoologists”, Tom riffs on Maurice Sendak’s classic book, bringing some Sendakian textures and shading into the drawing. This is Tom Gauld at his very best: thought-provoking and cheeky! The cartoon is drawn on 8¼”x 11¼” paper, with the art area measuring near 4½”x 7½”. This is the typical size of Tom’s work, which is signed in pencil, also as usual. You don’t see Gauld’s work show up for sale on the secondary market all that often, so this is a great opportunity to pick up a gem.
