DescriptionSo this is my BIG ONE! My Kamandi example!!! I can't say this was the most expensive piece I ever bought as you might expect, but it is the second most expensive. Just so you know, I have never taken any pleasure from paying a lot of money for art. I always viewed it as a necessary evil for some characters and certain artists. I found this piece on Mike Burkey's website and immediately put in my claim to buy it. I tried to do a trade first and when that failed Mike was OK with me doing time payments. It only took me a little over a month to pay it off but only because two CAFers purchased art from me. Many thanks to Paul P. and Tommy C. by the way!Now on to the art. As you can see a lot is going on here. You have Kamandi "sounding an alarm" of sorts. Also you have some police officers trying to restrain a Gorilla-Man. Competent inks by D. Bruce Berry as well. As you may or not know, Kamandi, who Jack Kirby created, ran for 59 issues with The King providing the pencils and writing duties for issues 1 through 37 and then again for issues 38 through 40 but that was for the art only. Gerry Conway did the writing. I think it is great that I have a page that was written and drawn by The King with the main character also being a creation of The King as well! So many thanks again to Mike, Paul, and Tommy for helping make this happen. I would also like to point out that after buying this piece I went on eBay and was able to locate a complete run of Kamandi in comic book form. I have a lot of reading to do to learn more about this character, and I look forward to it! I hope you all enjoy the scan!!! Social/Sharing |

I'm so glad I could be a part of you acquiring this outstanding Kirby piece! I think it's so cool that Kirby wrote so many of these issues as well, and that your splash comes from one of them. Have fun reading those back issues, and enjoy this wonderful splash!

Burly android Chicago cops wrestling a talking gorilla to the ground while Kam yells out a warning of a new threat off screen? So Kirby. Another great thing about this splash is the intro text, recapping the basic situation of the series. It's a terrific representative example.

Simple rule to remember: once you get Kirby, you get Kirby. Younger generations may take for granted his contributions and there is a fair amount of gatekeeping from the older crowd. However, once the vocabulary of the King is opened up to you, you will discover the many wonders and dimensions that are the foundations of the Marvel Universe, the DC Fourth World, and many other things people have been talking about.

Who you calling a mobster? And tell your gorilla friend to stop that nonsense about my face! Kirby was so good at aiming the action at the reader, and also thereby deepening the image. Is the baddie behind me?! :) A beautiful Kamandi title splash from the King, and enjoy reading the series! Big congrats!

What's the world coming to? It's getting so that you can't take your shirt off and take your angry armoured gorilla for a walk anymore.

I had to chuckle after reading your description because it so closely parallels mine. I also found my Kamandi title splash on Burkey's site, and I also had to make time payments. Was so happy I got this when I did. Can't even imagine what this would cost me today. Anyway, happy to be in the same Burkey/Kriby/Kamandi/splash club with you.
