DescriptionI've been an admirer of Matania since discovering his work in college. Extremely prolific, he portrayed people, places and historical events from ancient times to WWI.This illustration, done on Fashion Plate Board, was part of a series done for The Children's Crusade, a story by Henry Treece, published in the 1962 UK magazine LOOK AND LEARN. I'm not sure exactly which issue it appears but there is handwriting on the back that states Chapter 11, page 55. The caption that was to accompany it reads: "Part VII This small child is sick with the plague." Appears to be rendered in pencil and ink wash and measures 6" x 9" I strongly recommend the book "Drawing from History, The Forgotten Art of Fortunino Matania," a thorough compilation and analysis of his life's work. Romanticized look at history through the lens of Matania! Amazing illustration work.
