Description

From the pages of X-Factor #108, comes a page from the story of “Promised Vengeance”.

There was a lot of great material beautifully stuffed in this issue. Mystique’s return, her vengeance on Legion for killing Destiny in UCX #255 and his lead up to LEGION QUEST which starts in next issue (#109, which ultimately led to AGE OF APOCALYPSE). But the most X-citing piece of this issue is this page, which calls back to the legendary issue of X-Men Unlimited #4 (March 1994); where Mystique revealed her relationship to Nightcrawler (birth mother, later revealed as birth father, since Destiny actually carried him and Mystique fathered, revealed in X-Men Blue Origins in 2024) and Rogue (her adopted mother), connecting them as siblings.

This story page, beautifully executed with art and writing, showcases Forge and Nightcrawler virtually reliving the death of Mystique through Rogue’s memory of the incident where she sacrificed herself to save her children in issue X-Men Unlimited #4 (easily one of my top 10 favorite issues in comics). Duursema and Milgrom match Bennett and Moncuse’s character art and emotion from the related issue. The panels are cinematic and really draw you into the emotional sad state bending forced upon Rogue. As she is reminded of Mystique falling to her death when she had to choose to either save Nightcrawler (newly revealed brother and longtime X-Men teammate) or Mystique (adopted mother, friend, caretaker, and sometimes enemy to the X-Men). She made the impossible choice and chose Nightcrawler, partially destroying herself with the choice she made, as Mystique and Destiny were the only two people to really care about her from her youth.

I truly love this very Uncanny soap-opera family drama, especially the subject matter dealing with Rogue, Nightcrawler, Destiny and Mystique. So very happy to be able to add another piece of this story to my collection. And especially X-tra cool when another book references one of my favorite issues.

What a lovely Rogue page!  The close up by Duursem and Milgrom shows her bearing the full weight of her decision!

Stunning page by Jan Duursema and Al Milgrom from X-Factor, in which Rogue shares her memories of the death of Mystique with Nightcrawler and Forge. The page is an important moment in Rogue's life, beautifully retold by Duursema. The look on Rogue's face in panel three is unforgettable. This is a very special page and I'm happy that it's in your collection. Fantastic pick-up, congrats!
