DescriptionTortured Domino Running Out Luck and Skin! This is the monumental page that first drew me to Josh Cassara’s art. He is becoming one of my favorite current artists at Marvel for so many reasons, which is X-tra awesome since he is the main artist for the X-MEN series, that being the center of my wheelhouse. Quentin Quire finds Domino (Neena Thurman) captured and inside a glass chamber where she is being slowly dissected/flayed, having parts of her body grafted onto soldiers so they can enter through the gates of Krakoa (in the new DAWN OF X series) and utilize her power of manipulating probabilities to her favor (luck). The art is spectacular and the details for the gruesome acts that were done against Domino are horrific. When I first read this issue, this page screamed epic. It was something that wasn’t going to be washed away easily, it has and still does greatly affect Domino; as a character defining moment of her history. In later issues of X-Force (#8), she makes it a point of not ever wanting to forget what was done to her, as she and Colossus discuss suicide to be reborn without the remembrance of the pain they have each gone through. As she dies in his arms, she proclaims: “I want to remember everything”. Josh’s pencils/inks and gray toning are phenomenal in most pages I’ve seen and even more so for all the extra details you see in person on the raw art pages. This art can stay black and white and still beautifully tell the story (although I do have to say the Dean White’s color work with Josh’s art does make it even more visceral, especially with this page, kudos to him for adding another bloody layer to Domino’s already contrasty skin). This big reveal end of story page has so much going on; the flayed chunks of skin on her arm, face and leg really drive home the torment (I really like the choice to even take a chunk out of her leg, missing eye, missing ear, etc). Cassara’s art, mixed with this horrifying X-Force story from Percy are a great pairing. I’ve really enjoyed so much of his work in X-Force (the really long run of main covers and interior pages) and the work he is currently doing on X-Men (his COTV being another great highlight). His personal connection to his art and his interactions with his fans (me being on of them) make the experience of getting his pages even more meaningful. He really takes his time with the fans and shares his process with actual joy. For me, having X-Men be such a prominent factor in my life, collection and even parts of my career, it’s a bit surreal to have this kind of contact/connection to the main artist that gets to tell their stories. I’ve become a really big fan and promoter of his art and to get the page that brought me to his table is truly X-ceptional and am very grateful. Social/Sharing |

Wow! That's quite a scene. Glad you mentioned that tones, because that's what first struck me about this piece. Love all the tubes and hoses coming out of the top and all the cables at the bottom. Also like the way the scene is lit. Really a very dramatic image.

In the grand tradition of science fiction women in test tubes, now with the added body horror that comes from tightly woven modern mutants storylines! Cassara melds all those genres together to bring life into this uncharted world of X-Men comics.

Josh Cassara does some pretty great body horror and the opening arc of X-Force was strong. It's been great seeing his art become one of the defining looks for this era of X-comics.

Cassara is definitely a rising star in the world of comics. Congrats on picking up this splash as I imagine Josh's work is becoming tougher to get by the day as more OA fans discover his talent.
